What is a Crypto Bro?

A crypto bro, which can also be written as cryptobro, is a word used to stereotype a man who has invested in cryptocurrency. It is usually uses in a derogatory manner to describe a man who talks of almost nothing else other than crypto. He likely tries to convince his friends and family to buy cryptocurrencies whenever possible.

There is also some rhetoric that cryptobros can be recognized by their hoodies, sweatpants, and the Lamborghini you can’t see how they can afford, but we find that though these are common, they aren’t necessary to identify as a crypto bro.

It’s important to note that crypto bro is a bit of a derogatory term as it is often used to describe someone who is “brainless” and just following trends. But we are here to let you know that while you shouldn’t use it unless someone asks you to, it isn’t always derogatory anymore. This follows the same trend as the term nerd, because while it was once derogatory, it has since become a simple description that individuals use to self-identify.

**Just to be clear the term crypto bro is not the same as the term tech bro and doesn’t carry the same connotations.

Why Are Crypto Bros Going Extinct?

The term ‘crypto bro’ came about when cryptocurrency was in its advent, and unknown to most of society. Back then (in 2009) it was unlikely that the average person had heard of cryptocurrency. In fact, only those who were involved in internet forums where the first cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, was created, had ever heard of the stuff.

The thing is, these early peoples who spent their hours digging in forums all had one thing in common. One, they had ample time to read, meaning they likely didn’t hold a job at a bank or white collar business (hence the hoodies). Two, they likely had to spend some money to invest before they could eventually make money (again, this explains the poor clothing choice). And three, just like anyone who ever found treasure, they just had to tell someone about their discovery (also…this helped their bottom line).

Either way, in the early days there was no way to learn about cryptocurrency without the knowledge of a crypto bro, which could be why they seemed to appear in the most odd places, and why you remember your encounter so vividly. That being said, nowadays, cryptocurrency is everywhere, and you no longer need a crypto bro to explain it to you. Not only that, but because it is so mainstream it is likely that almost anyone can explain it to you—at least at a base level, meaning you don’t have the same elusive crypto bro concept in mind.

Society is Changing

Beyond the fact that one can now perform a deep dive into cryptocurrency with a google search, we also need to point out that society as a whole is changing. While we aren’t saying that sweatpants are going out of style, those crypto bros who likely used to wear sweatpants have likely made it big and are now involved in cryptocurrency businesses—meaning you’ll find them wearing a suit instead.

Additionally, the status symbols of society have changed as well. While some men and women still choose to flaunt their net worth in the form of a vehicle, many also choose other methods, like nice homes, expensive hobbies, and far-away vacations. Especially as the economy begins to shift again, we think many cryptocurrency enthusiasts will be careful with their gains, placing some in savings or in more liquid assets for a rainy day.

Who Uses Cryptocurrency?

Since we have established that the crypto bro era is almost over, you may be asking who are these people who are using cryptocurrency? Honestly, you might be shocked, but 55 million Americans have held cryptocurrency in the last year—which is quite high considering there are only about 342 million of them. But before you assume all these Americans are buying their groceries in Bitcoin, note that 92% reported they were using cryptocurrency as an investment only.

But, of the Americans who do use crypto daily, here are some stats about them:

·      14% of crypto holders/users work in tech

·      12% of crypto holders/users work in construction

·      7% of crypto holders/users work in finance

·      7% of crypto holders/users work in manufacturing

·      6% of crypto holders/users work in healthcare

What’s interesting to us is the fact that these are also the industries where blockchain is starting to be used more heavily. So, do you think these Americans buy crypto because they see uses for it at their job? Or for other reasons? We aren’t sure ourselves.  What we do know is 56% of cryptocurrency holders acquired their holdings between 2020 and 2025. Which means the other 46% of users acquired theirs between 2009 and 2020, so we can assume cryptocurrency is growing twofold.

Can a Woman Be a Crypto Bro?

As we mentioned above, the term crypto bro is currently dying out, so we see no reason to call anyone a “crypto bro” anymore. That being said, while the term crypto bro is generally used to describe males, we see no reason it can’t be used to describe a woman either.

But, with the success of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies the past few years, we expect the term crypto bro to die out entirely and for most of the world to simply refer to these men and women as “smart” and “rich” but, of course, we could be wrong and the term crypto bro could live on.
